Kaleidoscope Point

“Creativity is a lot like looking at the world through a kaleidoscope. You look at a set of elements, the same ones everyone else sees, but then reassemble those floating bits and pieces into an enticing new possibility..."<BR><BR>-Rosabeth Moss Kanter

Similar to Twitter (I'm a member too, ulk), you can post updates or your status. This is similar to the "what are you doing now" of Facebook and Friendster's shoutout. That's all, you say? Well, you can share links and videos. But it's no Multiply where you can blog entries and photos to your heart's content. It's no Facebook where you can poke, throw a sheep, take quizzes, and add a hundred of apps to your profile. It's no Friendster where you can parade how many (imaginary) friends you have :))<br>But on Plurk you can (pretend --did I just type that?) tell everyone how busy and interesting you day is/was. <br>Status/updates are presented on a timeline, making it more visually appealing as compared to Twitter. It's a fun way to keep your friends posted and to see what other people are doing. Like Twitte...

JK Rowling's Harvard Speech

Found this on Pao's Multiply site. Inspiring read.

Warning: Quote overload!!! Here are a few of my favorite lines...

"Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools."

"It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default."

"Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone's total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes."

"Choosing to live in narrow spaces can lead to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the wilfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid."

"We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves...

Tokyo Series 2: "Spirit" Shrines and Temples

While I was not quite as "templed out" as I was in Ankor, my short stint at Japan lead me to 5 temples.

In Tokyo:
Meiji Temple; near Harajuku. Though I heard traditional wedding ceremonies are regularly performed here, I didn't get to see one.
Sensoji Temple; in Asakusa. Probably the one place in Tokyo that feels traditional. The only place I saw women in traditional kimonos.
Zojoji Temple, in Kanto area, at the base of Tokyo Tower. A large temple in the middle of a business district. The contradictions in Tokyo :)

In Kamakura:
Great Buddha, Daibutsu. Uh, really really large Buddha with really large slippers too.
Hasedera Temple. Known for holding the largest gilded wooden statue of Kannon and having a wonderful view of the seaside village of

Malolos: Old Houses, Special Puto and its Women

I had the chance to walk down memory lane with my lolas. They went home to Malolos, to the place they grew up in. It was a pleasant tour around the city, with my lolas pointing out old houses and landmarks and constantly remarking how much the place had changed.

The highlight of the trip was the Casa Real Shrine, which gives tribute to the Women of Malolos. It was special not just because it advocates women's rights, but because our family was part of it. The Tiongsons were relatives and two of my grandmothers were even named after their grandaunts: Feliciana Tiongson, whom Lola Fely was named after; and Filomena Tiongson, Lola Nena's grandaunt.

The first floor has 2 main areas. One area contains a few pieces of antique furniture. The second area pays tribute to the women of Malolos, showing pictures and some memorabilia. The second floor has one room on exhibit. It pays tribute to the more contemporary women of Malolos. Famous examples would be Josie Natori, Dalisay Aldaba and C...

We all need them, whether we're walking numbly through our lives, unaware of our desires, or we're on pins and needles, painfully aware of the contrast between our lives and our imaginations every second of the day.</p><p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; ">The stories we tell each other, the hopelessly common little tales about laundry piling up and impending deadlines and planned vacations and recalcitrant contractors and petty squabbles with co-workers, never do justice to the richness of our internal lives. Even though we may only recognize some variation on survival mode in each other, even though we mouth trivialities and small talk, inside us there's a kaleidoscope of emotions, a million and one imaginative leaps to faraway places, along with looming questions and unfocused needs and bouts of nostalgia. We carry around three-ring circuses of hope and regret inside, with sad clowns and fat ladies and graceful t...

Tokyo Series 1: "Peace": Gardens in a Bullet train paced City

While browsing through iPhoto, I just realized that I had not sorted, edited and uploaded my Tokyo photos! Life was happening then. This will be a series which I grouped together based on the basic themes that stuck me most while we were in Tokyo.

I call this series "Peace" since being in the many gardens of Tokyo offered just that --a respite from the high speed Tokyo pace. Photos from these series are from Shinjuku Gyo-en and Hama-Rikyu. Shinjuku Gyo-en was a sprawling garden which aside from its huge Japanese garden also featured French and English gardens plus the d*mn biggest chrystanthenums. Hama-Rikyu, though much smaller, did not disappoint either. Being along the river, it also known as the "beach garden" and was the jump off point for the Asakusa river cruise.

Aside from these, I also saw a lot of pocket gardens all over the city. Having all these greenery in a city is what makes it a world class metropolis and not just another urban jungle.

Click on the photos for a...

Dove, Onslaught

Sited as one of the Top 10 TV Ads by Time Magazine 2007, with the following write up:

Part of Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign, this commercial shows a wide-eyed little girl being barraged by ads promising to make a woman "younger, smaller, tighter" and ending with the line, "Talk to your daughter before the beauty industry does." It's a compelling 60 seconds that makes a gal want to lather up in gratitude. Unfortunately, Dove is owned by Unilever, which advertises its Axe body spray to men using a lingerie-and-stiletto-clad girl rock band called the Bom Chicka Wah Wahs.
